Brief description:

The present atlas of the granaries (ksour) of southern Tunisia provides for the first time a complete and richly illustrated compilation of all ksour of southern Tunisia. These buildings represent an attractive yet largely unfamiliar architecture. They embody a broad range of forms relating to the situation types, floor plans, elevations and building materials. They served as a collective granary, which served the storage of agricultural products in the border area of the agronomic dry boundary of southern Tunisia. This traditional role has ceased to exist several decades ago. Today the ksour are witnesses and representatives of a cultural heritage of great value, which deserves protection and recovery of functions.

The published volume, which was written by two geographers (Professor Dr. Herbert Popp from the University of Bayreuth, Germany, and Professor Dr. Abdelfettah Kassah Universität of Sfax, Tunisia) is the result of a research project on collective granary of the Maghreb countries. It includes, on one hand, a synthesis and re-evaluation and critical review of the cultural heritage of ksour in its many aspects of territorial, historical, social and architectural nature, and on the other hand, a systematic and comprehensive documentation of more or less all ksour southern Tunisia, which are illustrated opulently with numerous photos, maps, satellite imagery and oblique aerial photographs. The book is an indispensable starting point for any further employment and for the systematic preservation and intelligent revival of this heritage.

The contents of the volume:

400 pages with 59 illustrations, 5 text boxes, 14 large photographs as well as for everyone of the 92 ksour specification of GPS position, detailed photos, precise satellite image, map with location of the object; flap, in a slipcase
